Hello to all of our wonderful customers and friends! We know times are difficult for everyone right now in this uncertain world, and we cherish providing the vibrant, happy space you can come to when you need a little pick-me-up.Unfortunately, things are also pretty dire for small businesses, and we could use your help to ensure our ability to keep our doors open. For 39 years we’ve been honored to be a unique part of the NYC community, and we have every hope of continuing to be that little wonderland in your life for a long, long time. However, since the beginning of 2025, our business has been affected by the double whammy of a significant drop in income paired with rising costs. Despite our best efforts, we have found ourselves falling deeper and deeper into debt. This substantial decrease in day to day sales at our Union Square location is calling into question whether keeping our brick and mortar store open is sustainable.
Manjushri is one of the Bodhisattvas in Buddhism. He is considered the Buddha of Wisdom. His name means “Gentle Glory” in Sanskrit. Tibetan People call Him Jamphel Yang (འཇམ་དཔལ་དབྱངས།). He represents Prajna Wisdom (refers to wisdom, insight, understanding, or intelligence, often translated as "the wisdom of the real nature of phenomena". It's a crucial aspect of the Buddhist path to Enlightenment, guiding practitioners towards liberation and understanding the true nature of existence. Therefore, He often appears in Classic Prajna.
Many Legends say He is the Master of Seven Buddhas and all the Mothers of Buddha. It is said that Prajna Wisdom is the Teacher and Mother of all Buddhas. The Lord Buddha once said Manjushri was His Teacher in His Past Life.
Iconography of Manjushri
Manjushri is often depicted holding a double edge flaming sword on his right hand and holding a lotus flower on which there is a scripture of Prajnaparamita Sutra (Great Wisdom). He is either seen sitting on a Lotus Flower on a Moon Disc or Riding a Lion.
The double edge Sword is called Prajna Khadga (Sword of Wisdom). This Sword represents the sharpness of wisdom that can cut the root of ignorance with its luminous rays emanating out of it.
The scripture on the Lotus Flower symbolizes Wisdom as pure as a Lotus.
The Lion symbolized the stern majesty of Wisdom as it is the King of Animals. It also means Manjushri teaches Dharma without favour or fear.

Beads Of Paradise began in the late 1980’s as a small store in the East Village. We originally specialized in African antiquities, textiles, beads and jewelry – but as interest in world art and beads grew throughout the 1990s, we underwent a major expansion and moved to our current location in the historic Flatiron district of New York City.
