  • Lobi Stool Very Fine Large Size, Burkina Faso #568 PROVENANCE
  • Zoomorphic three legged stool with twine handle, Lobi People, Burkina Faso.
  • Measurements: approx. 19 1/2" L.
  • Traditionally, three-legged stools are used by men, whereas four-legged stools are used by women.
Utilitarian objects as well as personal objects denoting social status, Lobi stools are often personalized with decorative elements making special to its owner.

The name Lobi originates from two Lobiri words: lou (forest) and bi (children), meaning literally, “children of the forest” who settled initially on the left bank of the Mouhoun River or the Black Volta dividing Burkina Faso and Ghana.

Used in the Family Compounds of the Lobi and other related subgroups, the shape of the stool sometimes suggests zoomorphic imagery. Though low, sitting on the stool is surprisingly comfortable. Used at mealtime, and in the home to perform daily tasks.
