  • Brass Heirloom Necklace From The Baoule people of Côte d'Ivoire ca. 1900 #1
  • Goldsmith of the Akan Speaking People who fashioned exquisite figurative bronze weights for measuring gold and gold dust, also created similar style bronze beads to not only resemble the weights in style, but also the fine gold jewelry worn by Noble Men and Women in their communities. Although not made from gold, these bronze versions were highly prized and valued, and were passed down as Heirloom Beads through generations.
  • These Baoule Brass Beads were cast by master metalsmiths using the lost wax method. Fine wax threads were used to achieve the detailed line decorations with great skill. Each single Bead was created from a single wax model. The complex geometric shapes were typical of the Baoule bead designs of the day. Historically, the Baoule were intricately tied culturally and artistically with the Asante kingdoms of Ghana. In both cultures, their love and attraction of the angular, geometric shapes and fine meticulous and complex design were heavily influenced by the designs and jewelry artwork of North Africa, and the finely detailed work of the Kingdom of Benin.
