Fang Ngil Mask, Gabon #309
This mask is shaped like a helmet and whitened with kaolin. The face shows a heart shape, with merging eyebrows forming a straight nose bridge, enlarged above a particularly shaped mouth with teeth.
Fang Ngil masks had a legal function, indicated by the severity of the prominent eyebrows and by the narrow incised eyes.
They were carried by local authorities (notables), who were in charge of those responsible for crimes.
Measurements: Height: 40 cm, weight 1100 grams.
Condition: This old mask with clear traces of use comes from an old private collection.
