Goddess Durga
Durga is one of the most popular of the Hindu Goddesses and is considered by many to be the Divine Mother Goddess. Multi-dimensional and comprised of many personas, she was born of a cosmic crisis, when the male gods found themselves unable to defeat a pack of demons led by Mahishasura. With multiple arms each holding a weapon gifted to her from the gods, Durga took down the band of demons with a calm aplomb and finesse. Goddess Durga is called upon to protect her devotees from their suffering and remove their obstacles; she is the embodiment of purity, knowledge, truth and self-realization, and preserves moral order and righteousness in the universe.
Goddess Durga is the Warrior Goddess, whose Mythology centers around combating evils and demonic forces that threaten peace, prosperity and dharma of the good. She is the fierce form of the protective mother goddess, willing to unleash her anger against wrong, violence for liberation and destruction to empower creation.
Through all Her forms, Goddess Durga encompasses the essence of Salvation and Sacrifice. She is the Mother of Bounty and Wealth, as also of Beauty and Knowledge. She is also known as Divine Mother, Who protects Mankind from Evil and Misery by destroying evil forces such as selfishness, jealousy,
Durga is depicted in the Hindu pantheon as a goddess riding a lion or tiger, sometimes with many arms each carrying a weapon.
In Burma, Goddess Durga is worshipped as The Goddess of War, Victory of Good over Evil, The Invincible One, and The Fierce form of Mother Goddess.
