  • Yoruba Gelede Body Mask with Ibeji Soccer Twins, Côte d'Ivoire #1185
  • Worn in Gelede Masquerade Ceremonies representing the Blessed Mother of Twins
  • The occurrence of Twins among the Yoruba is stronger and more prevalent than among any other Ethnic / Cultural Groups in Africa.
  • Women do not wear or dance the masks in Gelede. While the festival is entirely dedicated to honoring the Power of Women—specifically Elders and Ancestors known as "Awon iya wa" (Our Mothers)—the masked, costumed performances are carried out by men.
  • Male Performers, Female Subject: Men in the Yoruba Community dance in pairs, wearing wooden, colorful masks that often feature serene, idealized Female faces.
Purpose: The dances are meant to appease, honor, and entertain the powerful Female Forces in Society.
Costume Details: Dancers wear costumes that often include padded, exaggerated breasts and buttocks to emulate the Female Form.
Female Leadership: Despite the male dancers, the Gelede Society is governed by Women, and a Female Priestess often leads the Ceremonies.
  • Although Women do not perform the physical dance wearing the masks, they are the central focus and authority behind the ritual, acting as organizers and observers.
