Berber Wedding Contract, Morocco #1018, #1019 SOLD SEPARATELY

  • Originating from the Anti-Atlas region in Morocco these wooden Arabic wedding contracts were used by the Berber tribes. As there was no paper available, these documents were noted on wooden panels. One of the wedding contracts in this lot was legalized by the authorities with a stamp that says 'ontrol des actes' in red ink. The texts are written in Arabic (sometimes the names of villages in Berber) with henna ink.
  • Provenance: Bought in situ on a field trip to Morocco.
  • These antique wooden manuscripts are in reasonable condition.
  • Measuring (round one) 26 cm and 5.5 cm diameter; (shelf) 8 x 14.5 x 1 cm. Both are from around 1920-1930.
