  • This type of Power Figure, outdatedly referred to as a Fetish Figure, was believed to influence the health and prosperity its holder, as well as protect against any enemies or evildoers. The term Nkisi was then used to refer to the terms 'sacred' or 'divine'.

  • The Kingdom of Kongo was a pre-colonial Kingdom that existed from the late 14th century until the early 20th century, covering parts of modern-day Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Gabon.
Sophisticated Government: The Kingdom was known for its advanced political organization and trade networks.
Significant Legacy: Kongo was one of the most famous and well-documented African Kingdoms. The name "Kongo" is still used to refer to the Bantu-speaking People of this region.
Contact with Europe: Kongo established formal relations with Europe and was one of the first nations in the region to convert to Christianity after Portuguese contact in the late 15th century.
  • The Nkisi plays the role of Mediator between Gods and Men, bulwark against diseases and evil spells.
