Rare & Ancient Beads

African glass "Trade Beads" of European origin came into existence when European Traders along the route between Europe and Africa were pressed for an acceptable currency form to exchange on African soil. Brightly colored glass beads with exotic shapes and intricate patterns fit extremely well as the most desirable trade material due to the popular demand that African Cultures had for luxurious and unusual adornment. The classic traditions of African Adornment were finely crafted of gold, iron, ivory, and bone and other organic materials. Gorgeous exotic stone beads of Indus Valley origin were actively traded in the Empire of Mali at this time. However, glass working technology outside of Egypt and the Ancient trade in Northern Africa was mostly unknown in Sub Saharan Africa at this time. Therefore, the exquisite glass beads that the European traders had to offer were widely and rapidly received.

The Dutch and Portuguese were among the first Europeans actively trading along the African Coasts dating back to the 16th century. "Trade Beads" manufactured in Europe readily fit into a barter currency system used for African goods and already actively traded commodities such as ivory, gold, copper, spices and palm oil. Sadly, slaves were also an actively existing trade, and certain beads were also accepted in this heinous practice as well. European trade beads took on such importance and cachet that they became a status symbol of wealth and power in African communities. Certain types deemed the most valuable were reserved for use only by Kings and their Royal Courts. Almost all cultures in this time period viewed these exotic "foreign" glass beads a symbol of wealth and social standing. The beads entered into the realm of Heirloom Beads and Dowry Currency, and were passed down from generations of families as highly treasured possessions.

Vintage Afghan Donkey Beads

Famous in Middle Eastern folk lore are " Donkey" hand wound glass beads ca.1940-60 are believed to have the power to transform or "lead" the thoughts of another person to the owner's train of thought by laying the beads on another person's shoulder

Afghanistan origin ca.1940-60

"Water Amber" Nuggets Strand / Necklace

Although these unusual beads have appeared in the West African Bead Trade for over 2 decades, there is little actually known about these "Amber" rough rondelle shaped beads. They are identical to the versions used in North America and Canada as they came from the same factories in Bohemia (situated today in the northern part of the Czech Republic and a small part of what used to be East Germany). Bohemian factories had been making glassware, vases and cups since the 12th century.

There are two types of glass techniques from which Russian Blues were created; drawn tubes or moulded manufacture.

Russian Blues that were created from drawn tubes underwent the following process: a bubble is formed in a blob of hot molten glass. The blob is then stretched out onto the end of a metal tube, creating a hot glass tube that is then cut into smaller sections forming beads. The initial bubble becomes the hole in the bead center. Individual beads were cut from 6 to 8 sided simple or compound (two layer) tubes. Each bead then was ground by hand at different angles creating a multi-faceted effect, sometimes as sparkling as a gemstone. The number of facets and degree of quality was dependent on the skill of the glass faceting/ grinding craftsman. Some of the largest Russian Blue shapes can have as many as fifty or more facets.

Russian Blues that were created in the moulded process underwent the following procedure: thick rods of glass are heated to molten consistency and fed into a complex apparatus that stamps the glass, including a needle that pierces a hole. The beads again are rolled in hot sand to remove flashing and soften seam lines. In some of the moulded beads, the left over glass in the seams of the mold was removed by hand finishing. Pressed or molded beads are associated with lower labour costs.

Length : Approx. 32" ( Beaded Section 26")

Bead Size : 11 x 10mm

The "Russian Blue" strands offered here are in the same configuration as they were purchased in West Africa years ago.

12th to 16th Century Forest Green Serpentine Beads from Mali and Mauritania

Vivid Forest Green Serpentine have been treasured throughout West Africa for more than a thousand years. It is suggested that as much as 75% of Baltic amber has this quality of color and appearance, ranging from dense white in color through tones of yellow, tawny gold (butterscotch), cognac red-brown and black (deepest brown). For the general European taste and aesthetic, clear "sunshine" yellow Amber is regarded as superior to "cloudy" opaque Ambers. Transparent clear Amber was viewed more to resemble precious stones (Topaz, Citrine, Yellow Sapphire) that are highly valued for their clarity and gem qualities. Likewise the European aesthetic appreciated transparent Amber as more often there are clearly defined "inclusions" and materials visibly trapped inside during the Amber formation/ fossilization period; animal, vegetable, and more rarely mineral. The purveyors and merchants of Baltic Amber would usually export cloudier Ambers abroad as inferior or less desirable. When true, natural examples of this exported Amber were received in Asian destinations such as China, Nepal, Tibet and as far as Mali, West Africa, this cloudy material (with it's rich color variations and warm hues) was much preferred to clear Amber. The natural Baltic cloudy Ambers became the traditional standard of beauty and quality in these areas, and entered their cultural vernaculars as the highly valued, precious Prestige and Heirloom commodity it remains to this very day.

Free-form nuggets ranging in size from 10mm smallest to 17mm largest center nugget.

Knotted on natural silk cord with a gold vermeil hook clasp.

The gorgeous "Trade Beads" are Baltic Amber in origin and are in the same configuration as they were found years ago in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Bead Size Approx.: W 12mm x H 6 - 10mm

Strand Length : Approx. 27"

Vintage Afghan Donkey Beads Necklace

Famous in Middle Eastern folk lore are " Donkey" hand wound glass beads ca.1940-60 are believed to have the power to transform or "lead" the thoughts of another person to the owner's train of thought by laying the beads on another person's shoulder

Afghanistan origin ca.1940-60

Famous in Middle Eastern folk lore are " Donkey" hand wound glass beads ca.1940-60 are believed to have the power to transform or "lead" the thoughts of another person to the owner's train of thought by laying the beads on another person's shoulder

Afghanistan origin ca.1940-60

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0371/8597/products/IMG_1307-01_d48eee28-ff70-4bcc-82ef-6b95358b7a81.jpg?v=1719614739
