Essaouira Hamsa with the Seal of Solomon and Solar Disk

  • Essaouira Hamsa with the Seal of Solomon and Solar Disk
  • Size Approx. 2 3/4" x 2 3/8"
  • This particular style of Hamsa is from the town Essaouira. The Hamsa body appears to be cast 800 Silver (80% silver content) which was then hand finished and stamped with a  complex vegetal (Garden-like) pattern. In the center of the "Garden" on the stamped Hamsa is a Sun Symbol, possibly a symbolic link to the Ancient Sun God Shamash, resting inside a Seal of Solomon.
  • Shamash was the God of the Sun in Sumerian and Mesopotamian religions. Shamash, as the Solar Deity, exercised the power of light over darkness and evil. In this capacity, he became known as the God of Justice and Equity and was the Judge of both Gods and men. According to legend, the Babylonian King Hammurabi received his code of laws from Shamash. At night, Shamash became Judge of the Underworld.
  • Shamash was not only the God of Justice but also Governor of the Universe; in this aspect He was pictured seated on a throne, holding in his hand the symbols of justice and righteousness, a staff and a ring. Also associated with Shamash is the notched dagger. The god is often pictured with a Disk that symbolized the Sun.
  • The authors of the Hebrew Bible generally attempt to portray the Sun in a non-anthropomorphic manner, sometimes using it as a symbol of Yahweh's power. The Hebrew word for "Sun" is often substituted for the word "light".
  • Origin is Morocco circa 1950
