In village workshops, glass scrap is collected and crushed by hand into a powder. Chemicals or dyes are not used to color the glass, so the most beautiful glass fragments are gathered and sorted by their original color before grinding. The ground glass is then placed in rough molds that have been coated with kaolin clay to keep the hot glass from sticking, and then heated in kilns until the glass melts. Once the beads are removed from the kiln, the beadmaker will work each bead into the right shape, and then form the bead hole with an awl before the glass has a chance to cool. Sometimes the bead hole is made by inserting a cassava stem in the molten glass, which burns up in the heat but leaves the hole in the bead.
The finished beads come in soft colors of blues and greens, also earthy-toned greys and blacks. They have a handmade texture with a finish that looks frosted, similar in appearance to beach glass. |
